Ohio Information Technology Insurance - It's Not Just for E-Bay Anymore

The face of business has changed dramatically over the past decade.  In the years after the Internet’s infancy, more emphasis is being put on traditional bricks and mortar businesses to have an online presence and almost every business uses the Internet to communicate and work.  Internet exposure however is a double edged sword.  Ohio Information Technology Insurance, something that ten years ago was confined to the needs of software publishers has now come full circle and is protecting a myriad of Ohio businesses and industries.

Risk exposure and liability from having information online and even a commercial website are often much more than Ohio business owners realize.  Newswires are constantly reporting significant and damaging security breaches, even from the companies many Ohio businesses rely on to keep them safe.  Just last week on February 7th, newswires such as Reuters and CNET reported details of Symantec’s (Norton Antivirus’ parent company) ongoing negotiations with a hacker group and that the source code for some of their more popular antivirus programs had been published on the Internet, putting many users at risk.  If a company whose sole purpose is protecting information technology has been breached, why do so many Ohio business owners feel that they are secure?

All of this comes in the wake of a year of major security breaches.  Sony’s popular Playstation Network was hacked last April and again in October of 2011, with almost 2.2 million customers’ credit card information being compromised.  The paid service was down for 44 days while Sony scrambled for answers and a solution.  In the end Sony spent upwards of $170 million dollars just to get the network back up.  They aren’t alone.  Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the once mighty (and now defunct) communications giant Nortel was the victim of an ongoing series of cyber attacks over a ten year period which they failed to acknowledge or defend, costing them unknown amounts of money.

Customers are not blind to these security issues either.  They know that daily they are faced with multiple attempts to defraud them of valuable information whether is be via email or fraudulent websites.

Data security is only one facet of Ohio Information Technology Insurance.  Lawsuits due to theses issues, physical loss, employee theft, financial damage due to system crashes and privacy breaches, fraudulent charges and contractual liability costs are just a cross section of some risks managed by Ohio Information Technology Insurance.  Most business owners are aware of the need for commercial property insurance, but in the Internet age hackers can be even more dangerous than physical burglary.  Protect yourself, your business and your clients immediately with a call to the skilled and dedicated insurance professionals at Amer Insurance.  You will be glad that you did.
